Piper PA-28-181

Piper PA-28-181 Fuselage
The Piper PA-28 Cherokee is a family of light, single-engine aircraft that has been a staple of general aviation since its introduction in the early 1960s. Designed primarily for flight training, personal use, and small-scale commercial transport, the PA-28 series is known for its simple construction, dependable performance, and forgiving flight characteristics. With a low-wing design, fixed tricycle landing gear, and a variety of engine options across models, the PA-28 is both accessible and adaptable, making it a favorite in flying clubs and flight schools worldwide. Its easy handling and predictable stall behavior have made it a trusted platform for countless student pilots.

Over the decades, the PA-28 series has evolved into multiple variants with improvements in avionics, engine performance, and aerodynamic refinements. Despite these changes, Piper has maintained the aircraft’s core design and purpose. Whether used for cross-country trips or touch-and-go practice flights, the PA-28 offers a reliable and comfortable flying experience. Its all-metal construction and durable airframe have also contributed to a long operational life, keeping many early models still active in the skies today.

Piper PA-28-181 Archer III

The Piper PA-28-181 Archer III is one of the most popular and widely recognized variants in the PA-28 family. It’s powered by a 180-horsepower Lycoming O-360 engine and features a fixed-pitch propeller, making it a well-balanced aircraft for both training and cross-country flights. Introduced in the mid-1970s, the Archer brought improvements in performance and comfort over earlier PA-28 models, including upgraded avionics, a more refined cabin interior, and aerodynamic tweaks like a longer wing span in later versions. The Archer remains a top choice among private owners and flight schools for its fuel efficiency, solid performance, and ease of maintenance.

A tornado took this bird for a joy ride but we still expect to recover lots of goodies, such as...

Piper PA-28RT-201T Arrow IV

The Piper PA-28RT-201T Turbo Arrow IV is a high-performance, turbocharged member of the PA-28 family, aimed at pilots looking for more speed and altitude capability. It features a 200-horsepower turbocharged Continental TSIO-360 engine and retractable landing gear, setting it apart from its fixed-gear siblings. One of its most distinctive features is the T-tail design, which differentiates it from other PA-28 models and was intended to improve handling at higher speeds. The Turbo Arrow IV is particularly well-suited for instrument training and longer cross-country flights, offering higher cruising altitudes and speeds, along with the capability to operate efficiently in a wider range of weather conditions. This particular aircraft landed a bit short short on the runway, leading it to our hangar- However, we are going to get plenty of components out of this bird, including...

Cessna 172D Skyhawk

The Cessna 172D, introduced in 1963, marked a notable evolution in the popular Cessna 172 Skyhawk series. One of the most visible changes in the D model was the transition from the “fastback” fuselage design to the more familiar rear window configuration known as the "Omni-Vision" rear window. This modification improved visibility from the cockpit and became a defining feature of later Cessna 172 models. The D model retained the high-wing, all-metal, tricycle gear layout that made the 172 a favorite among flight schools and private owners alike.

This particular 172D showed up in our disassembly hangar after suffering damage from the high winds during Hurricane Milton. While the airframe remained largely intact, there was visible damage on the areas that took the brunt of the storm. It’s always tough to see a classic like this come in with storm damage, especially considering how long these aircraft have been flying. But it’s also a reminder of how durable these planes really are — even after 60+ years, they’re still holding up.

Under the cowling, the 172D is powered by a 145-horsepower Continental O-300-D engine, driving a two-blade fixed-pitch propeller. This engine provided reliable performance for its time, with a cruise speed around 115 knots and a range of roughly 575 miles. The aircraft has a gross weight of 2,300 pounds, and its light handling and stable flight characteristics made it a popular trainer. Even though the D model was only built for one year, its updates helped set the tone for the long-lasting Skyhawk line — and many are still flying today, thanks to tough construction and dedicated maintenance.

We will get a good list of parts and components from this aircraft, such as...
