Two Piper PA-32R Units In The Shop...

Piper PA-32RT-300T

Piper PA-32RT-300T Turbo Lance II
The Piper PA-32R is a family of single-engine, six-seat, high-performance, retractable landing gear aircraft developed by Piper Aircraft. It was introduced as a variant of the Piper Cherokee Six, designed to offer improved speed and efficiency. The first model in the series, the PA-32R-300, was launched in 1975 and was named the Cherokee Lance. It retained many of the structural features of its predecessor but featured retractable landing gear and a more streamlined design, enhancing its aerodynamic capabilities.

In 1978, Piper introduced the Turbo Lance II, equipped with a turbocharged engine and a T-tail configuration, distinguishing it visually and functionally from earlier models. However, the T-tail design received mixed feedback due to changes in flight characteristics, particularly at lower speeds. As a result, Piper later returned to a conventional tail design with the subsequent Saratoga series. The PA-32R series continued evolving with enhancements in avionics, interior comfort, and powerplants, maintaining its appeal for both private pilots and small commercial operators.

Over the years, the PA-32R has earned a reputation for its spacious cabin, strong performance, and versatility. It has served various roles, including personal transport, air taxi services, and business aviation. The aircraft's robust design and reliable operation contributed to its longevity in production, making it a noteworthy model in general aviation history. Despite the eventual discontinuation of the series, the PA-32R remains a respected and widely flown aircraft within the aviation community.

Piper PA-32R-301 Saratoga SP

The PA-32R-301 is a key variant in the Piper PA-32R family, introduced in 1980 under the name Piper Saratoga SP. This model marked a departure from the earlier T-tail design, returning to a more conventional low-tail configuration, which improved low-speed handling and pilot visibility. Powered by a 300-horsepower Lycoming IO-540-K1G5D engine, the PA-32R-301 offered strong performance and continued the series’ tradition of providing a spacious six-seat cabin, making it popular among private owners and air taxi operators. The variant saw further development with the introduction of the Turbo Saratoga SP, which featured a turbocharged engine for better high-altitude performance. The PA-32R-301 series remained in production with several refinements until the early 2000s, solidifying its role as a versatile and reliable aircraft in general aviation.

Piper PA-32RT-300T Turbo Lance II

The Piper PA-32RT-300T, commonly known as the Turbo Lance II, was introduced in 1978 as a turbocharged variant of the PA-32R series and featured a distinctive T-tail design. This configuration was intended to improve aerodynamic efficiency and offer a modernized appearance, although it altered the aircraft’s handling characteristics, particularly during low-speed operations. Equipped with a turbocharged Lycoming TIO-540 engine, the Turbo Lance II provided enhanced performance at higher altitudes, making it suitable for longer cross-country flights and operations in mountainous regions. While the T-tail design was initially a notable selling point, pilot feedback eventually led Piper to return to a more conventional tail design in subsequent models. Nonetheless, the PA-32RT-300T played a significant role in the evolution of the PA-32R lineup and demonstrated Piper’s commitment to innovation in general aviation.

This aircraft has an interesting story. It seems the pilot made a forced landing after losing power at about 300ft in altitude. He had just fueled up, but the subsequent investigation could not determine a cause for the loss of power. The NTSB investigated, and the final result was that the reasons for the loss of power could not be determined. Regardless, the airplane landed hard, leading it to our shop. We will get a good list of parts and components from this aircraft, such as...

Mooney M20K

The Mooney M20 is a renowned series of four-seat, piston-powered general aviation aircraft produced by the Mooney International Corporation. First introduced in 1955, the M20 was the 20th design from Al Mooney and became the most successful in the company's history. Known for its sleek, low-wing configuration and retractable tricycle landing gear, the M20 series earned a reputation for its impressive speed, efficiency, and engineering innovation. Over the decades, the aircraft evolved from early models with wooden wings and tails to advanced all-metal designs like the turbocharged M20V Acclaim Ultra, which debuted in 2016.

Throughout its production history, the M20 saw continuous refinements in performance and comfort, including aerodynamic enhancements, more powerful engines, and modern avionics. With more than 11,000 units built, the M20 line is a testament to enduring design and pilot appeal. Despite interruptions in production due to economic downturns, Mooney resumed manufacturing multiple times, with the latest iteration featuring composite components and cabin doors on both sides—a first for the M20 family. The M20 remains a beloved aircraft among private pilots, offering a blend of speed, range, and elegance that few others in its class can match.

The Mooney M20K, introduced in 1979, marked a significant evolution in the M20 series as the first variant to feature a turbocharged six-cylinder engine. Designated the M20K 231, it was powered by a 210 hp Continental TSIO-360 engine and was named for its top speed of 231 mph, offering enhanced high-altitude performance and extended range. The aircraft also featured a wider wingspan and increased fuel capacity, making it a favorite among pilots seeking speed and efficiency in a single-engine aircraft. Subsequent improvements led to the M20K 252TSE and the Encore models, which refined the turbocharging system, improved soundproofing, and increased gross weight, further cementing the M20K’s place as a high-performance, cross-country cruiser within the Mooney lineup.
