Aircraft salvage from BAS Part Sales, the world leader in aircraft salvage
This week, Dave & The Mechanics pulled in two aircraft to get a head start on next week's workload. The Cessna 177RG Cardinal in the ship is NOT a wrecked airplane, and we will recover nearly every part and component from this aircraft - including the IO-360 engine and 3-blade McCauley prop that are non-prop-struck. The boys also pulled in a sweet little Cirrus SR20 that makes for a fantastic parts plane.

Cessna 177RG Cardinal

The Cessna 177 Cardinal was developed in the mid-1960s as a modern replacement for the Cessna 172 Skyhawk, aimed at creating a "futuristic 1970s successor." First flown on July 15, 1966, and introduced in 1968, the 177 featured several innovations, including a cantilever wing without lift struts and a new laminar flow airfoil, improving aerodynamics and pilot visibility. To address the obstructed views during turns typical in the 172, the pilot's seating was placed ahead of the wing’s leading edge. However, this design led to a forward center of gravity issue, partially mitigated by using a lighter Lycoming O-320 engine and a stabilator for improved control. Despite initial handling challenges, which Cessna addressed through modifications under the "Cardinal Rule" program, the 177 was known for its sleek design and improved upward visibility. Production continued until 1978, with a total of 4,295 units built.

The Cessna 177RG Cardinal RG variant, introduced in 1970, was a significant evolution of the original 177 design, featuring retractable landing gear and a more powerful 200 hp Lycoming IO-360 engine to offset the added weight of the hydraulic gear mechanism. This variant boasted a substantial performance improvement, achieving a cruise speed of 148 knots, 22 knots faster than its predecessor, the 177B. The cleaner aerodynamic lines resulting from the retractable gear and increased power made the 177RG appealing for both private owners and flight schools seeking a complex aircraft for training. With 1,543 units produced, including those built by Cessna’s French partner Reims Aviation, the 177RG's versatility and enhanced performance established it as a valuable platform for both cross-country flying and advanced pilot instruction

This particular 177RG had a bad spar and no replacement in sight. After exhausting several options that didn't help progress, the owner decided to sell the aircraft. The keyboard warriors will go crazy over this one. It is a really nice aircraft with a great interior, incredible avionics, and an IO-360 with a 3-blade McCauley prop that has not been prop-struck. This airplane is not wrecked, and we will recover basically everything except the spar. The hot and high-demand items on this aircraft will go almost immediately. So, if you are in need, we recommend calling us right now to get your hands on the parts you need before they are gone!

The list of parts and components that we will recover from this aircraft is a mile long. The following list is not a complete inventory, call us if you have a need...

Cirrus SR20

The Cirrus SR20, introduced in 1999, is a pioneering light aircraft produced by Cirrus Aircraft, based in Duluth, Minnesota. As the company's first type-certified model, the SR20 marked a significant step in general aviation with its innovative features and modern design. Notably, it was the first general aviation aircraft to come standard with a whole-airframe parachute system, known as the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS), which has become a hallmark of the Cirrus brand. Built with all-composite materials and equipped with advanced avionics, the SR20 introduced a new standard of safety and comfort in personal and training aircraft. Over the years, the SR20 has undergone numerous updates, including improved avionics suites and enhanced performance capabilities, ensuring its continued relevance in the aviation market.

Cirrus Aircraft was founded in 1984 by brothers Alan and Dale Klapmeier with the vision of revolutionizing general aviation. Their journey began with the VK-30, a kit-built pusher-propeller aircraft, which laid the foundation for future developments. Recognizing the need for safer and more advanced general aviation aircraft, the Klapmeiers focused on integrating cutting-edge technology into their designs. This commitment culminated in the creation of the SR series, with the SR20 leading the way. The aircraft’s success set the stage for the subsequent SR22 model, which has become one of the most-produced general aviation aircraft of the 21st century. Cirrus’s dedication to innovation and safety has positioned the company as a leader in the industry, with the SR20 playing a pivotal role in shaping modern general aviation.

This SR20 came to a hard stop in a ditch adjacent to the runway after a cabin door malfunction and some pilot error. It did take some damage to the firewall area and the aircraft but will still yield a long list of SR20 parts and components, such as...
