Swearingen SA-226T

The Swearingen Merlin, developed by Swearingen Aircraft and later produced by Fairchild Aerospace, is a pressurized, twin-turboprop business aircraft. Its development was initiated by Ed Swearingen, who initially modified Beechcraft Twin Bonanza and Queen Air aircraft into upgraded variants he named Excalibur. Eventually, the design evolved significantly, resulting in a completely new aircraft designated the Merlin. Its first model, the Merlin IIA, took its maiden flight on April 13, 1965, shortly after the competing Beech Model 65-90 King Air had debuted. Initial Merlin designs incorporated parts from other aircraft but soon transitioned to original elements that defined the Merlin's distinctive appearance and performance characteristics.

The Merlin family continued to evolve through various iterations, notably the SA26T Merlin IIB, which introduced Garrett AiResearch TPE-331 turboprop engines that became standard across future Merlin models. The next significant redesign appeared with the SA226-T Merlin III, launched in February 1972, featuring entirely new wings, inverted inlet Garrett engine nacelles, and redesigned landing gear and tail assembly. These innovations set the template for subsequent Merlins and Metroliners, which shared considerable design features and technology, reinforcing their legacy as versatile and reliable aircraft.

Production of Merlin aircraft ran continuously from 1965 until 1998, spanning several notable variants. These ranged from corporate transport to military applications, with models such as the SA226-AT Merlin IVA, designed specifically for corporate use, and equipped with larger, rectangular windows and optional Rocket-Assisted Take Off (RATO) capabilities for performance in demanding environments. The Merlin series saw global service in various civilian and military roles, underscoring its adaptability and effectiveness.

Specifically, the Swearingen SA-226T model represents the Merlin III variant, characterized by significant structural and aerodynamic improvements from its predecessors. It features a redesigned fuselage, integration of Metro-derived wings and tail components, and advanced Garrett TPE331-3U-303G turboprop engines. These changes delivered enhanced performance, increased reliability, and provided the aircraft with improved operational flexibility, making the SA-226T a distinct and respected member of the Merlin family.

This Merlin III comes to our disassembly shop after serving in a fleet of aircraft based here in Colorado. What makes it a little uncommon for the BAS shop is that it is neither wrecked nor prop-struck. The aircraft is complete and we will recover a long, long list of Merlin parts and components, such as...

Cessna 421C

The Cessna 421 Golden Eagle is an American twin-engined, pressurized, light transport aircraft, first introduced in 1968 as a pressurized advancement of the earlier Cessna 411. Renowned for its performance and comfort, the 421 quickly gained popularity, selling 200 units within its first production year. The aircraft features an all-metal low-wing monoplane design with retractable tricycle landing gear and is powered by two geared Continental GTSIO-520 engines, each providing 375 horsepower. It underwent various refinements throughout its production lifespan, notably in its fuselage, wingspan, fuel capacity, and avionics.

The 421 line of aircraft includes multiple variants, each representing incremental improvements and design adjustments. These versions, from the initial 421 through the 421A and 421B, introduced enhancements such as increased gross weight, improved range, a higher service ceiling, and larger storage compartments. The aircraft's versatility is demonstrated by its popularity among private operators, executive commuters, and even military organizations worldwide, with several countries employing it in military capacities.

The Cessna 421C, introduced in 1976, represents the most significant advancement within the Golden Eagle line. This variant featured a redesigned wing structure known as "wet wings," eliminating the wingtip fuel tanks used in earlier models, thus streamlining its aerodynamic profile. The landing gear underwent an important modification, changing from straight-leg to a trailing-link design, which significantly improved landing comfort and aircraft handling on the ground.

Powered by Continental GTSIO-520-L or -N engines, the 421C maintained the strong performance credentials of earlier models, with a maximum takeoff weight of 7,450 pounds and seating configurations accommodating up to ten occupants. With 859 units built before production ceased in 1985, the 421C solidified its reputation as a reliable, efficient, and capable aircraft suited for both business and personal aviation purposes.
